Printing on Watering Cans: Pad Print, Screen, or Label

05/21/2026

A watering can is a curved, water-exposed surface, which makes decoration a real consideration. Get it right and your logo looks sharp and lasts for years; get it wrong and it scratches off after a season. Here’s how the main methods work and when to use each.

The three workhorses are pad printing, screen printing, and applied labels, plus in-mold for plastic.

Pad printing: for curves and small logos

Pad printing transfers ink from a plate via a silicone pad, which conforms to curved and irregular surfaces — ideal for the shoulder or body of a metal can. It handles clean one- and two-color logos well and, once cured, resists water and normal handling. It’s the go-to for a crisp logo on steel and copper.

Screen printing: for bold single colors at volume

Screen printing lays down bold, opaque color and is cost-effective at higher volumes for single- or two-color designs on flatter areas of a can. It’s durable and vivid, though it’s less suited to fine detail or tight curves than pad printing.

Applied labels: for full color

For multi-color logos, gradients, or photographic artwork, a full-color applied label (often weatherproof vinyl) reproduces everything the direct-print methods can’t. It’s the most flexible for complex artwork; choose a weatherproof, UV-stable label so it survives outdoor use.

In-mold graphics: wear-proof on plastic

For recycled-plastic cans, an in-mold graphic is fused into the surface during molding, making it effectively scratch- and fade-proof. It’s the most durable option for full-color designs on plastic, ideal for cans that will see heavy outdoor use.

Key takeawayUse pad printing for crisp logos on curved metal, screen printing for bold single colors at volume, weatherproof labels for full-color artwork, and in-mold graphics for wear-proof full color on plastic.
